4 ways in which Veris Combat ensures WHO-recommended Contact Tracing

“A pandemic is the worldwide spread of a new disease”–   WHO, 2020.

Diseases and mankind have existed together over centuries. Throughout the course, they have ravaged humanity, sometimes changed and created history, and, at times, wiped out entire civilizations. As the population has grown from 6,143,493,823 in 2000 to 7,794,798,739 in 2020 1 preventing the spread has become both important and impossible. Numerous methods are adopted ( Social Distancing, quarantine, and  Contact Tracing) to help flatten the curve.

The concept of contact tracking was first introduced by the WHO during the Ebola outbreak in 2014.

Contact tracing in the Ebola epidemic is defined as the systematic process of identification, assessment, and management of people who have been exposed to the Ebola virus to prevent further transmission of the agent.  Even though contact tracing is a critical element in containing the EVD outbreak, nevertheless it is just one of the multi-pronged strategies which are essential to halt the rise in the number of cases

During an EVD outbreak with established person-to-person transmission, new cases were more likely to emerge among contacts. For this reason, it was critical that all potential contacts of the suspect, probable and confirmed Ebola cases were identified and put under observation for 21 days (the maximum incubation period of the Ebola virus) from the last day of contact.

COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and spreads from person-to-person through droplet and contact transmission. To control the spread of COVID-19, interventions need to break the chains of human-to-human transmission, ensuring that the number of new cases generated by each confirmed case is maintained below 1 As part of a comprehensive strategy, case identification, isolation, testing and care, and contact tracing and quarantine, are critical activities to reduce transmission and control the epidemic.

Contact tracing begins with engaging communities about the disease, how to protect individuals and their communities, and how to suppress transmission. Contact tracing requires individuals to agree to daily monitoring, to be willing to report signs or symptoms of COVID-19 promptly, and to be prepared to go into quarantine for at least 14 days or into isolation if they become symptomatic.

There are numerous challenges for contact tracing. As a result of the wide geographical expanse of the EVD outbreak, insufficient human, financial, and logistical resources, and to some extent, limited access to affected communities. The process for setting up functional contact tracing systems have also been unclear; inadvertently contact tracing has been conducted in many different ways.

With daily advancement and an increase in the availability of technology, contact tracking has become easier and more cost-effective.
